Official Hardware Initialization Guide • Ledger Security Protocol
Welcome to self-sovereign digital asset management. Follow this verified onboarding guide to authenticate your physical Ledger device, download the Ledger Live companion application, generate your 24-word recovery phrase, and secure your cryptocurrencies with certified CC EAL6+ hardware isolation.
Compatible with Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+, Ubuntu Linux 20.04+, iOS 14+, and Android 10+. Always verify the cryptographic SHA-256 hash before running executables.
Follow this official initialization checklist to guarantee your private keys remain securely generated and stored exclusively offline.
01
Plug your device into your computer or mobile device using the authentic USB-C cable provided inside the factory-sealed retail box.
02
Select 'Set up as new device' and choose a confidential PIN code. This PIN guards physical access to your hardware wallet against unauthorized attempts.
03
Record each of the 24 words displayed on your hardware screen onto your offline recovery sheet in precise order. Never save these digitally.
04
Ledger Live verifies the cryptographic authenticity of your device's Secure Element chip to ensure your hardware has not been tampered with.
Ledger or customer support representatives will NEVER ask you for your 24-word recovery phrase. Do not type your 24 words into any computer software, mobile application, web form, screenshot, password manager, or cloud storage. Anyone with access to your 24 words possesses full and irreversible control of your funds. Only enter recovery words directly onto the physical buttons of your authentic device.
Navigating modern blockchain ecosystems requires robust safeguards against malware, unauthorized key extraction, and phishing vectors. Software-only wallets maintain cryptographic keys inside online operating memory where malicious browser extensions, keyloggers, and operating system vulnerabilities can silently compromise assets. Ledger hardware wallets resolve this threat model by storing your private keys inside a certified CC EAL6+ Secure Element (SE) chip, isolating your secrets entirely from your computer, phone, and the internet.
Unlike conventional hardware solutions running generic firmware architectures, Ledger devices leverage BOLOS (Blockchain Open Ledger Operating System). BOLOS isolates each application into an independent security sandbox. If an individual coin application ever encounters an error or update bug, it cannot access the private keys or cryptographic data of any other application installed on your device.
Furthermore, Ledger devices champion Clear Signing. Blind signing on untrusted interfaces has resulted in millions of dollars in stolen digital assets. With Clear Signing enabled by Ledger Live and verified decentralized applications, smart contract interactions, recipient wallet addresses, and gas fees are decoded into plain, human-readable parameters on your device's trusted display before you press the physical approval buttons.
Once your Ledger hardware device has been verified and your recovery phrase safely written, Ledger Live unlocks access to the broader Web3 ecosystem. From sending and receiving Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and ERC-20 tokens to staking assets natively for proof-of-stake rewards, swapping digital currencies through regulated partners, and managing NFTs with complete hardware-enforced confirmation, Ledger offers an all-in-one ecosystem for sovereign asset management.
If your device already has a PIN or provided pre-written recovery words in the box, DO NOT USE IT. Legitimate Ledger devices always prompt you to generate new words during initial boot. Contact official customer support immediately.
Your crypto assets reside on the decentralized blockchain, not inside the physical device itself. As long as you retain your 24-word recovery sheet, you can instantly restore your exact accounts and funds onto a replacement Ledger wallet.
